1. I *never* shampoo either of the twins' hair unless there is sand or dirt (from the garden) in it. I only wash it with conditioner, and I let the conditioner sit on their hair for several minutes each time.
2. I just started using a new conditioner with them. After trying all the expensive brands, I grabbed a bottle of Citre Shine for about $2. I love it.
3. I comb through their hair when it's full of conditioner. This is the comb we use:
4. After rinsing the conditioner out, I finger comb their hair, and then squeeze out as much water as I can.
5. (Here's the magic touch) With their heads soaking wet, I tell them to shake their heads side to side as fast as they can. They love doing this, and it creates perfect spiral curls.
6. I do not touch it after they've shaken their heads. not to comb it, not to dry it with a towel, not to put product in it. I just let it air dry, and that's that!

My friend and I were just commenting on E's curls. So cute! I keep telling myself, "someday, someday." Feels like it'll never come, though: I think I'm stuck with my adorably bald baby. :) Thanks for sharing your tips; I'll file them for the future!
What a great, simple routine! I do have a follow-up Q if I may. How do you refresh their curls on the days you don't wash their hair? Ashen's hair is crazy when he wakes up in the morning. I know I's hair is different texture/curls than E's, right? I think A's is more like E's, so I'm curious what you do.
I have a gigantic spray bottle just full of water, so I'll wet their hair with that and put some qhemet biologics olive cream conditioner and detangler. I just checked their website and didn't see it, so I'm *really* hoping that they didn't discontinue the product. It's consistently been my favourite for over a year...
anyway, after that, I comb through it and have them shake it again. somehow the shaking process creates perfect curls.
Yes, looks very lovely and sweet!
What do you mean by finger combing? I mean do you rake your fingers through or do you twist/twirl sections around your fingers? You make it sounds to easy!
And how often do you no-poo and comb out? Gotta admit, when T had all that hair, I only washed and combed like once a month (but brushed daily).
Of course S and B still have sparse hair and it would not want to twirl like that--so it helps when I damp with product or oil and twist quickly through it with my fingers to get some kind of curl going (I love their spiky profiles).
Oh wait, sorry, I just read you comb daily. Yikes, I'm not doing that! Takes way too much time and hurts too much (vs. a daily vent/boar bristle brushing). We will leave our curls the way they are. Messy and happy. :)
Unless you have some kind of magic comb you can tell me about??
I also have the Qhemet olive detangler stuff--thought I'd try it. Seems to me to be just as good as their heavy alma cream, or whatever it's called (which mean it is indeed good stuff).
When I say finger combing I literally just mean running my fingers through it to separate out the curls. I have done finger twists in his hair, but it's a lot more effort for a very similar result...
As far as combs and brushes that we use, we have several, but the one I come back to (and have about 5 of) is a black plastic Conair wide tooth comb that we got at target. The teeth are wider at one end than the other, and that's the end we almost always use.
Elijah's hair is really no more difficult than my hair to comb out daily. Izzie's is a lot tighter curl and will start to dread if I don't comb it daily or keep it up in braids / twists. It's a much more intensive process all around.
Lately, I've been keeping Izzie's hair down most of the time because she's got lots of baby hair / breakage and I wanted to let that grow out a bit before going back to some of the more intricate styles.
In terms of how often we no-poo, the kids usually get a bath every other night (though lately they've been insisting that they take showers with me every morning... argh! I truly have *no* peace!).
We have the exact same comb! Wow, you bath the kids a lot. I am very bad at it since it takes a long time and the bathroom is flooded after (and by the time I get all 3 out and running all over the house naked, there is usually pee pee spills before I can get them all diapered). It's a pretty big chore here. Oh, and you should hear T scream his head off every time I rinse his head!
I prefer to shower alone too, although we have a really nice doorless, walk-in shower so plenty of room to share (and a separate hand wand for them--pretty cool).
Had no idea such wonderful coils could be achieved so easily. They really do have beautiful locks. Thanks for your hair story! Now if only T's hair would grow back big and beautiful since his first hair cut fiasco. :(
P.S. BTW, been meaning to tell you that E's and I's Halloween costumes (as seen on other blogs) were the cutest thing ever!!!!! And "peace" you say? Ha! Welcome to mommy hood! :)
he's a cutie, for sure.
