Brummel Park: Evanston, IL
This is the closest park to our house, so I'd been saving it for a rough day. Today was that day. The combination of stresses from Izzie's school reluctance, the anniversaries of my mom's birth and death, a scary and sad suicide at a local school, and a bomb threat and evacuation at another school that happens to be 2 blocks away from the twins' preschool has proven a bit too much for me to handle. By the time the kids got home on the bus (15 minutes late) I was so exhausted, riddled with concern, and generally feeling terrible, that walking down the block was all I could muster.
Thankfully the kids didn't mind at all since they'd been asking to go to this park for weeks. You see, it has a special slide, lovingly named the uh-uh-uh slide, and they absolutely love it! We've seen these sorts of slides before: At the City Museum in St. Louis, and also at another local park. And of course there are many other sorts of super slides at all the parks we've been going to lately. But somehow this little slide at our very old local park trumps all those newer, fancier slides.
